Verruzzo Monteverro

The entry into the world of Monteverro red wines is this uncomplicated cuvée which due to its Sangiovese content represents a concession to the wine-growing tradition of Tuscany, yet at the same time has the spirit of Monteverro with the classic Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Verruzzo is aged for about a year in used oak barrels, it is charming even in its youth, soft and accessible and is a popular and versatile accompaniment to meals. It owes its dynamic character to the Sangiovese, its strength and structure to the Cabernet Sauvignon, its spiciness to Cabernet Franc, its softness to Merlot – all in all an Italian cuvée brimming with aroma and elegance. In Italian, “verruzzo” is an affectionate term for a young wild boar.

About the Producer, Monteverro Capalbio :

Monteverro is located at the foot of the medieval village of Capalbio, in the southernmost part of Tuscany, the Maremma.

The estate is only 5 kilometers from the sea and is characterized by its characteristic slopes from the stony ground of red clay. But it is also people who make Monteverro so unique. Their authentic passion for wine requires them not to compromise on manual processing and the selection of grapes during the harvest, to finally bring each grape variety, each terroir and each vintage to its maximum expression, with precision and by adopting techniques of innovative winemaking.
The Monteverro estate extends over three hills on an area of about 60 hectares, at a height between 30 and 80 meters above sea level.

From the vineyards you can see the Tyrrhenian Sea, which guarantees a constant breeze throughout the year.

To the west, the imposing profile of the Monte Argentario rises on the horizon, while to the south-east, about ten kilometers away, there is the border with Lazio. Climbing the hills, the vineyards give way to the “Mediterranean Macchia”, the typical vegetation made up of numerous evergreen shrubs and aromatic herbs including lavender, broom, rosemary and thyme. This is also the habitat of several animal species, whose undisputed king is the wild boar, and it is precisely to him that Monteverro owes its name: historically, “Verro” is the word with which in this region the wild boar is indicated, a sign that the bush surrounding the small town of Capalbio has always been (and still is) the home of many wild boars.

To allow nature to develop as freely as possible and promote biodiversity, only 35 of the total 60 hectares were cultivated with vineyards, while the rest were left to olive trees and, in fact, to the Mediterranean Macchia.

Even looking at the construction of the estate, you realize that in Monteverro nature is the protagonist: architecture, intentionally made up of low buildings, must integrate as much as possible into the landscape and not dominate it. A part of the cellar was created inside the slope, to take advantage of the natural refrigeration of an underground structure. When they built the winery, their primary objective was to process the grapes – and subsequently the wine – as natural and environmentally friendly as possible, exploiting the force of gravity: here sustainable agriculture, lots of manual labor and technologies are integrated together at the forefront, in order to fully exploit the quality potential that grows in the vineyard.
