The Cellar of Rocca Di Frassinello :

Rocca di Frassinello chose Renzo Piano, just as Piano, in turn, chose Rocca di Frassinello. The reasons lie in the ancient friendship that binds him to Paolo Panerai and in the family legacy of a father who produced wine, in particular Dolcetto. Piano conceived an essential cellar in its forms and designed not to be a monument to the client or the wine but to enhance the functionality of what is, and remains, a factory, a place where productive work is carried out, certainly particular, ritual, almost sacred, but at the same time humble. Usually the cellars have a progressive and horizontal development of the premises to follow the production order: from the vathouse, to the barrique cellar up to the warehouse. Piano has revolutionised this concept of space by asking the question of what is the heart of a cellar. The answer: the barrique cellar, the place where the wine is raised, that is to say where it improves its quality while remaining the right amount of time in the barrel or bottle, which Piano places at the centre of the cellar, underground to naturally maintain stable humidity and temperature. A large square measuring 40 metres by 40 metres with an immense attic that stands up without the support of any column. Around it, like a 20 metre wide frame, the distribution of all the functions of the production cycle. The steel vats are distributed on two sides and, above each of them, there is a manhole that opens onto the roof above which is none other than the large yard created by the barricade roof. During the harvest, the grapes brought in small crates to the selection tables, from those very manhole covers, fall down into the fermentation vats, thus avoiding the use of pumps that would cause stress to the grapes, deteriorating their quality. On the other two sides are all the other functions: bottling, storage, warehouse functions and logistics.

About the producer, Rocca di Frassinello :

This area, so incredibly suitable for the cultivation of vines, is included in the municipalities of Gavorrano and Roccastrada. It was there that the first, and to date the only, Italian-French joint venture project for the production of wine took shape. The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, the most famous signature of the wines of France and the world, has planned from the beginning to put together Castellare’s experience in the cultivation and vinification of the prince Tuscan vine, Sangioveto, and that of Lafite on the classic French vines, Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Shiraz.

The project, already extremely ambitious, has been further enhanced by a deliberate choice to crown the birth of the Rocca di Frassinello winery with the most prestigious of all possible signatures: that of Renzo Piano.

Rocca di Frassinello is the result of an Italian-French joint venture for which, in the almost 90 hectares of vineyards, there are both Italian vines – Sangioveto and Vermentino – and French vines – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Shiraz.
